Falling into Infinity supuso un cambio en la música de Dream Theater. El grupo intentó simplificar su música y alejarse de las canciones extremadamente complejas y virtuosas de sus anteriores discos para centrarse en canciones cortas y melódicas.
El disco se inicia con una de mis canciones favoritas del grupo, New Millenium, ocho minutos de virtuosismo controlado, sin dejarse llevar hasta la extenuación como lo harán en sus siguientes discos. Una introducción interesante, el protagonismo del bajo de John Myung, un buen estribillo y la parte instrumental donde se lucen todos los músicos.
El resto del disco es irregular, los mejores momentos se alcanzan justo en esas canciones largas y complejas que querían pulir y algún que otro ramalazo a Metallica en sus canciones cortas. Después de este disco seguí a trompicones la música de Dream Theater, a veces empalagado de tantas notas por segundo, a veces con curiosidad por comprobar si había algún cambio en su forma de entender la música.
El primer disco de Dream Theater me llegó desde Japón. Images and Words apareció en una carta que un amigo japonés le había enviado a mi hermana mayor. Ya desde el inicio con Pull Me Under me sedujo el rock progresivo del grupo, con influencias variopintas, Rush, Metallica, Yes… Images and words fue la banda sonora de uno de mis últimos veranos en Galicia y le tengo un especial cariño.
Awake y A Change of Seasons aumentaron mi entusiasmo por la banda, ritmos metálicos junto a complejos desarrollos instrumentales en canciones largas y atractivas y un virtuosismo que aún no se había desbocado. Pero con Falling into Infinity sufrí mi primera decepción y desde entonces Dream Theater sólo consigue atraerme a retazos con sus proyectos paralelos o con canciones como este New Millenium…
